What Do I Need For a Mock Trial Class?

Each student will need a Student Edition worktext and a Case Summary.  The Student Edition worktext contains the content of the mock trial class--from the fundamentals of the court system to writing persuasive opening statements.  The Student Case Summary provides the facts of the case on which the student's mock trial will be based, along with diagrams or case precedent, depending on the case.
Sample Pages

The teacher of the mock trial class will need the Teacher Edition of the text and a Teacher Case Summary.  Both will provide not only answers to exercises in the student materials, but practical, how-to recommendations based on experience with actual classes.  The Teacher Case Summary will provide guidance on legal theories and pertinent facts and arguments, in order to provide assistance to students preparing either side of the mock trial case.

Separating the case summaries from the foundational text allows many teachers and students to cover the same basic material, but still provides for customization of the experience by providing choices in the type of case used in the class.

When choosing between a trial case and an appellate case, remember:

*trial cases require more participants
*older students may find the issues in an appellate case to be more of a challenge
*a trial provides some roles that are less verbal (i.e., for the shyer student...however, the justice roles in an appellate case may serve the same purpose
*trial cases introduce some evidence, while appellate cases are argument-driven
